Our Story

Some are born with explicit knowledge of what their life goals are to be. Others have to search harder, but in the searching, a greater manifestation of purpose develops.

This has been the path Michelle Teo has walked. A certified Health Science Aromatherapist from Australia's College of Natural Medicine, Michelle is also proficient in Colour Therapy, Reiki, Aura Counseling and Crystal Therapy. Her niche qualifications led her to her first business venture, a New Age store in Bandar Utama which became a hub for alternative minded individuals in the Klang Valley.

When Michelle sold the business to focus on motherhood, it was the process of selecting and purchasing toys and clothing for her son that the seeds of a new business venture were sown. She began researching wholesalers and suppliers to see if there were clothing and toys of a better quality available. As Michelle tells it, "At that time I was not motivated to do anything with the information I had. I knew I was looking for a new business opportunity, but I was also a hands-on mum. If I were going to do something, it would have to be meaningful to my life. I have been into organic food for more than 10 years, so a part of me was motivated to look into an ecological business. This was also the reason I chose to enroll my son at a Waldorf school, which focuses on the development of the whole child, as opposed to focusing on academic ability. Waldorf schools champion the use of natural materials, and thus, most of my son's school toys are wooden, as the Waldorf belief is to allow children to engage all their senses as they learn and discover the world."

It was a trip to her husband's home country of Sweden that galvanized Michelle into action. "I was already a conscientious recycler before the trip, but in Sweden, there is a whole level of environmental consciousness, perhaps because the citizens are very nature loving. The impact of any purchase on the environment is all part of the way life is lived. I saw eco-fashion put into action, with a wide variety of organic cotton clothing and fashion. People would choose to patronize shops that had sustainably produced products. I wanted to introduce Malaysians to this way of life and perhaps give them alternatives to their purchases.

The store is an integrated environmentally friendly online retail store, offering organic clothing and toys to skincare and eco-friendly room decoration, with dedicated product ranges for wooden toys, soft toys, towels and bedding, playmats, natural remedies, cloth diapers, eco-friendly cleaners, organic nursing and sanitary pads, natural teethers, etc. Mija Ecokids' product offerings are in line with Michelle's belief that play is important for happy, healthy kids.

While many Malaysian consumers still balk at purchasing eco-friendly products because of the assumed higher cost, Michelle assures that Mija Ecokids offers a good price mix of products. To do this Michelle sources from local suppliers as well as from those in neighbouring countries. She also makes a case for paying a little bit more for organic clothing, saying, "Organic clothing is priced in about the same range as clothes from premium brand names. For the same price, you will be buying clothing made from organic cotton that is grown free from pesticides and harmful fertilizers that do not contain heavy metals. The clothing also uses only safe dyes."

This is especially of importance when selecting clothes for children under the age of two, whose skins have yet to develop the protective mantle. Exposure to commercial dyes and synthetic fabric can often exacerbate a child's sensitive skin, making it prone to eczema and rash. In her move to promote the benefits of organic clothing for babies, Michelle believes that the key is quality over quantity. "Commercially produced clothing may be cheap, but it is better that a child has ten good quality organic garments that can be used for a year, rather than 20 commercially produced ones which do not get worn, and are then grown out of and discarded, which further taxes the environment."

The same applies to Mija's range of toys that are made mainly from wood. The store also carries organic soft toys. The price difference between organic and commercial toys may be 20 to 30 percent, but all toys are free from chemicals such as phthalates. Phthalates are a family of industrial chemicals used as plastic softeners or solvents in skin care products which are toxic when absorbed into the body. The wood from the toys also come from sustainable sources.

All clothing is made from pesticide-free cotton and is free from hormone disrupting chemicals like Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE) and Perfluorinated Chemicals (PFC).

Most products stocked at Mija Ecokids has been researched and handpicked by Michelle to ensure they meet ethical and sustainability guidelines. She hopes her stringent selection standards will influence more people to look deeper into their choices of products and the impact of those products on the environment. "I started out the store for myself, because I wanted options for my life. Hopefully it will help others too. If more people take eco-consciousness to heart, more stores like mine can sprout and add to the choices available. Mija is breaking new ground and we hope to create awareness and consciousness to the fact that green business is the only way for a sustainable future, " stresses Michelle.

One myth that Mija Ecokids is setting out to debunk is that ecologically produced products are plain and boring. As a Colour Therapist Michelle is conscious of the power of colour and has ensured that colour plays a big part in the items offered at Mija Ecokids. "Being eco conscious does not mean being drab and colourless. It also does not mean throwing out all your existing clothes and toys and replacing them with eco ones. Being ecologically conscious means adjusting your lifestyle to recycle, reuse, use less, and buy less. It means educating yourself on the changes you can make," affirms Michelle.

  • Heavy metals and toxic dyes from clothing, such as p-Phenylenediamine (PPD), used in black clothing, which is a skin irritatant.
  • Formaldehyde, used in clothing to make it wrinkle free and water repellent, which is a skin irritant. It is also found in adhesive of wood products.
  • Possible Carcinogens, cancer-causing agents which include preservatives such as paraben, phthalates, formaldehyde, sodium benzoate.
  • Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs), used in the dyeing process, which is a threat to the environment and human health.

  • Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), used to repel water and oil in outerwear.
  • Pesticides from cotton farming.
  • Chemical fertilizers, produce nitrogen and heat, which contribute to air and water pollution, climate change and global warming, while the run-off of excess fertilizers creates ‘dead-zones’ in our oceans.

  • Chlorines and dioxin, used in bleached sanitary pads and diapers, which cause skin irritation, and reproductive disorders.
